The second exhibition within The Story Within and Beyond project, focuses on the „personal narrative of others.“ With a strong sense of ethics, the artists Barbara De Morree and Elske Verdoorn give a voice to special, anonymous Hague persons, erasing the boundaries between the persona of the observing artist and the persona of her inspiration. In these uncommon cases the objects of inspiration have become subjects. Most of all, what captures the viewer's attention in

Verdoorn's and De Morree's works, is the way in which these artists approach the subject which they take photos of. By leading long conversations with the main protagonists of their work, they almost enter into the role and shoes of „the other.“ They are not tourists and outsiders to the people they photograph, what Susan Sontag would be severely criticising, but they are taking the position of an insider which for Sontag affords one to have a different, more moral relation to the

subject. Naturally, to put on the shoes of the other, one also has to employ different performative, or even acting actions, such as taking long walks from Scheveningen to Katwijk beach, looking for the spots in the Duindorp forest or even taking a plane all the way to Australia! These works also have a performative, process based component, always based on listening to other person, and being synchronised and tuned to the energy of their subjects, and therefore based on „togetherness.“ That brings us to a, somewhat, „romantic“ vision of Mikhail Bakhtin, who believed that only when art involves listening to and identifying

with the other, only when love is involved there is a possibility of aesthetics. The works of these two artists definitely prove that in very rare cases that vision from being romantic transforms into being very true.

PART I: HISTORIAE

Ermolaev and De Moor approach the subject of history on various levels, with very layered artworks and a high demand for aesthetics as the outcome. In their works history is juxtaposed with the contemporary society, art history with contemporary visual arts, and finally, they transform different kinds of historical or literary narratives into interdisciplinary art installations by combining different kinds of techniques such as 16mm film and digital media and also Pepper's ghost (Ermolaev) or enfleurage and mummification (De Moor). In the installation Beatus

De Moore approaches the visual art genre of still life by mummifying the piglet and also by using the technique of enfleurage, the ancient practice of capturing the scents of flowers in purified animal fat for which he was inspired by the film Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (based on Patrick Süskind's novel). The artist is simultaneously „mummifying“ historical and contemporary, both by using ancient techniques today and making them an equivalent part of an artistic concept, but also by using art history visual genres such as still life, which can be traced both to

the Dutch Golden Age paintings or even to contemporary artworks such as Damien Hirst's. In De Moor's case the still life motifs are left out from the narrative, the motifs balancing on the border of life and death, blossom and decay: the piglet, the flowers... Ermolaev, on the other hand, enters the timesof the Dutch Golden Age by creating different realities and dimensions in his video-installation Holy Land: the two dimensional film for which he used the combination of 16mm film and digital media in order to mimic the light present in the paintings of the old Dutch masters, a three dimensional hologram and finally the palpable, material Delft ceramics. The exhibition space becomes a sort of the recreated setting for the story told with strong images and costume design, without words, about the Dutch history and its cultural codes. For instance, a windmill being deleted from porcelain by an African girl, can be seen as a reference to colonialism and slavery but also to the reconstructed Dutch landscape and a long, stable tradition. Ermolaev is creating a kind of a personal, foreigner's visual narrative of Dutch history.

From the one hand the literary historical fantasy novel Perfume triggered the creation of the artwork, the novel in which the character Jean- Baptiste Grenouille

has an extraordinary sense of smell which even brings him to kill young virgins with magical smells in order to create the smell which causes awe and adoration in others..., the unseen feeling of beauty and love. On the other hand, the real (hi)story with all its enlightened, artistic and cultural achievements, but also with its dark side, come together in Ermolaev's installation. The mankind, constantly balancing on the border between the enlightened human and an animal...A treadmill, the contemporary (but also historical) motif in Ermolaev's film perfectly shows our history (at first it was used as a human-powered treadmill for grinding grain, then as a punishment for prisoners and finally as an exercise treadmill) and futility of our sisyphean task. As in George Orwell's animal farm or in De Moor's contemporary memento mori story, „the pig“ finally becomes Beatus. And, in the end, Windmil or no windmil, life would go on as it had always gone on- that is, badly (Animal farm).

Opening exhibition program Feb - Jun 2018

'The Story Within and Beyond 'examines the manifestation and the potential of a “narrative” from various perspectives and throughout different media. It takes place from February until June and brings four duo exhibitions and two performances of mainly Hague young emerging artists. It's See Lab's aim to offer the new project space to artists of different disciplines so they can experiment and create new works or develop the existing ones in relation to the See Lab exhibition space or the surrounding Hague Beach. The exhibitions and the performances will be accompanied by artists' talks, workshops, and a poetry reading.

Part III: REMOTE PASSAGES
Annija Muižule & Katarina Petrović
April 6th- April 22nd

Both Annija Muižule and Katarina Petrović use impersonal narratives in the interdisciplinary way in order to create an interplay within different media and to criticize the capitalist techno-marketing society. In a dystopian way Petrović uses J.L. Borges Two English poems (1934) as the input text to deconstruct the language and to decipher Jupiter planetary emissions, and Muižule transforms the visual medium of photography into textual exploration of existential image culture.

All the World's a Stage part IVa exhibition (Nienke Sikkema, Emilie Ruitinga) and part IVb the performance program (Natalie Fyfe, Katerina Sidorova) focus on "the stage" as a possible place for creating and recreating stories, lives and identities, reversing an inner world stage into an outer (public) world stage and vice versa. It also examines the fragility of the human body and the exposure of one's intimacy to the outside world.

Evelien Gransjean
'Wat er eigenlijk allemaal gebeurt.'
Evelien geeft met haar werk uitdrukking aan een gevoel van desoriëntatie. In een grotendeels door wetenschap en technologie gestuurde wereld ziet zij hoe de mensheid steeds verder en steeds sneller evolueert. Het idee van de mens als een reiziger in de tijd is iets wat haar fascineert, maar tegelijkertijd ook een zekere angst oproept. Haar kunst is bedoeld om de kijker even stil te laten staan en te reflecteren op zijn positie in het hier en nu.
